As Director of Governmental Affairs of MYNT Cannabis Dispensary, Joey Gilbert utilizes his experience as a business owner, practicing attorney, entrepreneur, and community leader to push both his hemp and cannabis businesses into actualizing their true potential.
Mr. Gilbert is an alumnus of the University of Nevada, Reno and received his Juris Doctorate from the Thomas Jefferson School of Law. Mr. Gilbert has a long history of volunteerism and support of non-profit organizations, especially those focused on assisting veterans and youth. Mr. Gilbert has visited troops during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq and is the current Chairman of Nevada Veterans for Veterans. He currently serves as an assistant coach with the University of Nevada boxing team volunteers weekly at Redirect Athletics,focused on working with at-risk youth.
Mr. Gilbert was a 3-Time National Champion Collegiate Boxer, 4-Time Regional Champion, and 4-Time All American. In May of 2001, after returning from Basic Training for the Nevada Air National Guard, Mr. Gilbert became the Nevada State Golden Gloves Super Middleweight Champion. In 2004, Mr. Gilbert was cast in NBC’s “The Contender,” and was ranked #3 in the world by the World Boxing Organization (WBO), and #7 in the world by the World Boxing Council (WBC). Mr. Gilbert was formerly both WBO-NABO and WBC-USNBC Middleweight Champion (2006 & 2007) – finishing his career in 2011 with a record of 21-3 (17 KO’s).
In 2009, Mr. Gilbert formed his law practice, JOEY GILBERT LAW, focused on delivering the highest quality legal representation through effective, aggressive, and honest legal practice. As a practicing attorney, Mr. Gilbert’s work covers includes criminal and civil trial practice and administrative law, specializing in local and State processes.
In 2015, Mr. Gilbert was named to The National Trial Lawyers’ prestigious list of “Top 40 Under 40.” In 2018 Mr. Gilbert was awarded “best attorney” in Reno/Tahoe, by the Reno News & Review.
Since 2014, Mr. Gilbert has been devoted to becoming the premiere Cannabis Attorney in all areas of the industry, focusing on supporting the Licensing, Lobbying, Operation, Management and Political actions of the Cannabis Industry and its diverse class of business owners. Currently, Mr. Gilbert is handling the State of Nevada’s first ever attempt to revoke a marijuana establishment license, between the Department of Taxation and the Nevada Attorney General. Mr. Gilbert has been instrumental in propelling forward the Nevada Marijuana Industry by continuing to shape Legislation and Regulation. Mr. Gilbert was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Nevada Cannabis Industry Association and a member of the NORML Legal Committee.
Mr. Gilbert, along with his partner of 20+ years, Clint Cates, licensed and built one of Nevada’s premiere Cultivation and Production Establishments, CANNAVATIVE, resulting in one of Nevada’s first operationally successful cannabis companies in the state. Later he helped license and build Reno’s only Dispensary in the Downtown Entertainment District, MYNT voted as the best dispensary in Reno.
He lobbied the City Counsel for zoning and permitting approvals, and, against fierce opposition, secured the permissions to build the dispensary. Nearly a year later, Mr. Gilbert helped MYNT open its second dispensary. Mr. Gilbert currently works as the Director of Governmental Affairs, ensuring that MYNT remains compliant and has a voice in the development of cannabis legislation and regulation.
Mr. Gilbert educated himself on the opportunity to grow hemp on Nevada farms touring dozens of ranches in Nevada, southern Oregon, and Vancouver, British Columbia and has been working alongside various departments in the State to clarify Nevada’s hemp laws in correlation with new federal regulations under the 2018 federal farm bill. In early 2018, Mr. Gilbert began working with the Nevada farming/ranching community and assisting them with their hemp cultivation licenses becoming an informative resource in navigating the industry.
Mr. Gilbert has played a crucial role in developing the processes through which cannabis companies procure State licensure and has utilized his understanding of partner agencies, and his reputation to firmly establish himself as a leader in the Nevada legal, marijuana and hemp industries.
